Locale: Troyan

Troyan is 130 years old but the traces of the settlement run far back in history. The most ancient people that inhabited the area lived in the Paleolithic age (40 000 - 10 000 B.C.) During the first half of the 19-th century crafts flourish - homespun tailoring, forge crafts, wood tunery, fur-dressing and juelry and, most of all, pottery-making, which establishes itself as a leading, still vital pottery school. The exemplery fruit-growing makes Troyan's name famous - it is called the town of the plums and the magic plum brandy.

The Troyan Monastery of the Assumprion is 10 kilometers Southeast of Troyan. The wall paintings in its church were done by Zahari Zograf - a famous Bulgarian paintor from the Revival period. The woodcarving of the iconostasis was done by masters from the Tryavna School and the oldest icon in the Monastery, that of Three-handed Virgine, has a majical power, people say.

The only museum of art crafts in Bulgaria is located in Troyan. Its task is to collect and preserve items of craftswork and to promote the traditional crafts among visitors and tourists.

The National Exhibition of Art Crafts in Oreshak is also worth visiting. It is located on the way to the Troyan Monastery. Keep in mind that, while the items exhibited (carpets, weapons, clothes, ceramics) are of a prime quality, the store only offers tacky mass-made goods.

In the village of Cherni Osam there is a Nature and Science Museum which has over 700 species, representatives of the Central Balkan Mountain fauna.

The Chiflik and Shipkovo villages are well-known for the warm mineral water springs and are the most appropriate place to stay in the region.
